Moonlight reflecting on a quiet lagoon. Mysterious drums in the distance. The nighttime calls of exotic birds. Maybe a volcano? It's Tiki Time! In this episode we serve up a classic Trader Vic's Mai Tai and his equally enjoyable Trader Vic Sling.
Trader Vic came up with the Mai Tai in 1944. Happy 72nd Birthday you marvelous tipple! Here is the recipe adapted from Trader Vic's Bartenders Guide 1972. Mai Tai 1 lime (hang on to the spent shell) 1/2 ounce orange Curacao 1/4 ounce sugar syrup 1/4 ounce Orgeat 1 ounce dark Jamaica Rum 1 ounce Martinique Rum Cut lime in half. Squeeze lime juice over shaved ice in a double old fashioned glass. Hang on to one half of the spent shell. Add remaining ingredients to a cocktail shaker half filled with cracked ice. Shake and pour unstrained into the glass. Garnish with the spent lime shell and a mint sprig. The Trader Vic Sling is a whole other kind of delight from the Mai Tai. From the same book, here's the recipe. Enjoy! Trader Vic Sling 1 lime 1 dash grenadine 1/4 ounce creme de cassis 1/2 ounce sloe gin 1/2 ounce cherry liqueur 1 ounce gin Club soda Cut lime: squeeze lime juice in to sling glass over ice cubes; save one lime shell. Add the remaining ingredients in order saving the soda for last. Stir gently. Garnish with one spent lime shell, fresh mint and a fruit stick
